What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is one of the strategies used for internet marketing to increase and improve the number of visitors as well as sales (ROI) for a particular site. This process helps in getting good ranking in search engines which in turn helps in increasing the number of visitors to the website. Optimisation of a site ensures that the site is accessible to search engines. In short Search Engine Optimisation makes websites Search Engine Friendly.

The process of Search Engine Optimisation involves the following steps:

1) Website Analysis:

Website analysis is the first step of site optimization wherein the nature, structure, content & navigation of the website is analyzed so that a perfect optimization strategy can be planned. SEO strategies vary from site to site depending on the factors mentioned above.

2) Keyword Research:

The second and most important step of website optimisation is Keyword research and analysis. There are hundreds and thousands of search terms used by surfers on the internet for any particular service or product. Keyword research & analysis helps us to understand the most popular and suitable keywords for that particular website .

3) Creation of Meta tags:

Meta tag is a tag used in the source code of a webpage. This tag contains information about that particular website which explains a search engine about the description, content and keywords of that particular site. Not all search engines use meta tags to get the information about the site. Meta tags helps to target a specific page for specific keywords.

4) Content Optimisation:

Search engines give more weightage to content rich websites. Hence, optimising site content becomes an important factor for sites which look to achieve top position in search engine rankings.
The process of content optimisation consists of incorporating keywords in the content of the site. This doesn't mean that keywords should be stuffed in the content. The keywords should be added according to their relevancy to the content of the website and keeping in mind the keyword density factor. Keyword Density is the rate at which a particular keyword appears in a webpage in proportion with the other words.
